The Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship
The Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. began awarding scholarships in 1958 to a student at Norfolk State University. For many years, it was the largest scholarship awarded at the school by any private organization or individual. Beginning in 2006, the Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship will be awarded to a Norfolk Public Schools student attending any Historically Black College or University. The scholarship amount is $5,000. Mildred Dudley Peters, an educator in Norfolk, was one of the first graduates taken into the Mu Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in Norfolk. Mrs. Peters was the first black supervisor for the Norfolk Public School System, who in 1944 was appointed supervisor of Negro elementary schools. She revised the curriculum for the teaching of history, geography, and government for grades four through seven in approximately ten schools. At her death in December, 1956, she was survived by her mother, Mrs. Jeanie Dudley and one sister, Miss Jennie Dudley, also a founding member of Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
In 2004, the scholarship recipient was Latrese Wilder. She poses here with chapter president Adrienne James.
