NORFOLK ALUMNAE CHAPTER HISTORY

From Mu Sigma to Norfolk Alumnae

Norfolk Alumnae Chapter, formerly known as Mu Sigma, was the first chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in Virginia.

During the late 1920's it was a rarity to find more than ten Deltas in one city, thus making it difficult to establish a graduate chapter. However, in Hampton, Newport News, and Norfolk, Virginia, as well as Elizabeth City, North Carolina, there were eleven Delta graduates anxious to form a graduate chapter. Under the leadership of Ethel Pannell, Mu Sigma Chapter was chartered in September 1929, in Norfolk where six of the eleven Deltas lived. It was chartered as part of the Eastern Region because the South Atlantic Region had not been formed.

Marian Palmer Capps served as the first president of the chapter. The year of its formation Marian Capps was the chapter's delegate to the National Convention held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was elected national Treasurer at this convention, serving in that office until 1939, when she resigned.

In the early 1940's, Mu Sigma was reorganized to include only members living in Norfolk. The Mu Sigma name was retained until Grand Chapter began designating chapters by location. It was then that Mu Sigma became Norfolk Alumnae Chapter.
